White bread is delicious. Usually that is God’s way of telling us that it is bad. But Dr. Mary McCreery, Consultant Clinical Nutritionist & Dietician at the Blackrock Clinic – Ireland’s most prestigious medical centre – has teamed up with Brennan’s Bread – one of Ireland’s leading bread manufacturers – and has decided to go against all common sense and TELL Irish people that white bread is in fact, good for us. WTF.
In her advertorial she states that,
- White bread is one of the main contributors of fibre, iron and calcium in the Irish diet and that it can in fact make a positive contribution to Irish people’s diet
- White bread is not fattening
- It does not cause bloating
- White bread is naturally low in fat

White bread does not add to weight gain? Pull the other one will you Mary? Gluten sensitivity (also gluten intolerance) covers a plethora of disorders, including coeliac disease and wheat allergy, in which gluten has an adverse effect on the body.
Symptoms of gluten sensitivity include bloating, abdominal discomfort, pain or diarrhea, headaches, migraines, lethargy and tiredness, attention-deficit disorder, hyperactivity, muscular disturbances as well as bone and joint pain.
WHY DO PEOPLE REACT TO GLUTEN?
It is thought that one in six people are gluten intolerant. Most likely suffering from bloating. But Dr. ‘White-Bread-is-Good’ would disagree. Clearly, she has been inside the stomach of every sixth person.
The idea being, that gluten is in fact a poison, or a toxin and that no one should eat it. Wheat, barley, rye and oats contain toxic chemicals produced by the plant itself. These wheat-poisons have evolved to help the plant with its own reproduction and survival, at the expense of the animal that eats its seed. Hmm.

You can find out for yourself if white bread suits you or not. Try the ‘Eliminate & Challenge’ protocol. Basically, cut white bread out for three weeks. When three weeks is up sit down at the table and stuff your face with as much of the Brennan’s sliced pan that you can. Then let us know what happens. It will most likely not be good. You will most likely not want to eat bread again and you will most likely order at least three people you know/care about to quit the stuff.
Or you can go to your local health shop and take a food intolerance test, you will find out a lot sooner than three weeks and you will save yourself the trauma of the protocol.
